About us

Bad Axe Church

Formerly Bad Axe Lutheran Church was organized in 1869. The congregation was primarily made up of Norwegians who settled in the area. The church building was erected in 1874, overlooking the Bad Axe River near Purdy. It has been updated and renovated several times to meet the needs of a growing congregation. The congregation at first belonged to the Norwegian Synod, and services were held in the Norwegian language until about 1930.

From the beginning, Bad Axe was one congregation of a three-point parish, and was part of a merger that formed the American Lutheran Church. In 1984 the congregation voted to terminate its membership in the ALC, and become an independent congregation. Their desire was to continue to uphold, teach and live by the principles of the Bible, the inerrant and infallible Word of God.

This continues to be our only foundation for what we believe and how we are to live. Since that time, God has graciously blessed our congregation in every way, and given us the privilege to provide a place of fellowship for all ages. God has also given us opportunities to share the life-giving Gospel of Jesus Christ both here and around the world. We want to be found faithful until Jesus returns! We invite others to join us in proclaiming the good news that Jesus saves!

Core Beliefs & Practices of Bad Axe Church

The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God. This congregation believes and confesses that the Holy Scriptures, the 66 canonical books of the Old and New Testament, are the revealed Word of God for the salvation of man, and the only infallible source and rule for both faith and life.

John 10:35; II Timothy 3:16-17; Revelation 22:18-19

In the beginning, God (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) created all things. We believe and teach a literal 6-day creation as taught in Scripture, and warn against the false teaching of humanistic evolution.

Genesis 1-2; Ps. 100:3; 102:25; John 1:1-3; Revelation 4:11

Every person since Adam and Eve’s rebellion against God, is a sinner by birth and by choice, and therefore by nature headed for a Christless eternity in a place the Bible calls hell.

Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3

Jesus Christ is true God and true man, the only begotten Son of God, the only Savior, and the only hope for anyone to be saved.

John 1:1-3, 14; John 3:16; John 14:6; Acts 4:12; I Timothy 2:5-6

We believe and teach the necessity for all people, whether baptized or not, to come to the place of conscious acknowledgement of their sin, and the need to come to Jesus in genuine repentance of sin, putting their faith and trust in Jesus to save them. This is what the Bible calls “conversion” or being “born again.”

Matthew 11:20; Matthew 18:3; John 3:1-7; Acts 3:19

Forgiveness for our sins, and eternal life in heaven, are available to all who repent of their sins, and receive Jesus Christ into their life as their only Lord and Savior. All of this is available based on the finished work of Christ- His substitutionary death on the cross, and His bodily resurrection from the dead.

Isaiah 53; Luke 24:44-48; I John 1:7-10; Revelation 3:20; John 1:12; I Corinthians 15:1-4, 12-25; I Timothy 2:4; II Peter 3:9

Each local congregation should be free and living, subject and obedient only to the written Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

II Corinthians 3:17

Christians are called to be salt and light in this world. We are to live our lives, both privately and in public, reflecting Christ our Lord and Savior, and the principles spelled out in the Word of God.

Matt. 5:13-16; Col. 3:23-24

Simple and orderly worship is joyfully centered on God’s Word.

I Cor. 14:40

True Christian unity is based on a shared personal faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to His Word, not on outward ecumenism.

John 17:17-21

The Bible speaks to all the social issues of our day.

II Timothy 3:16-17

Therefore we believe, proclaim and practice (among other issues):

The sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.

Psalm 139:13-17

God-ordained marriage, which includes moral purity before marriage, faithfulness in marriage, the permanence of marriage for life, and the Biblical definition of marriage as one man and one woman for life.

I Timothy 4:12; Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:3-6

Christians are called to share the Gospel by word and by life, at home and abroad. As a congregation we therefore support local missions and Gospel outreaches, national missions like Pacific Garden Mission and VCY America Radio, and international missions that are faithful to the Word in the Far East, India, Hungary, Kenya and Paraguay.

Acts 1:8; Luke 24:45-48; Romans 1:16

When there are conflicts between civil law and God’s Word, we must obey God rather than man.

Acts 4:18-20; Acts 5:40-42; Romans 13:1-6

Jesus Christ is going to personally and physically return, first in the air to receive living and dead believers unto Himself (the rapture), and later to return to the earth to rule and to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords, and to judge the world of those who rejected Him as Savior.

I Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 11:15-17; Revelation 19:11-20:6; Revelation 20:11-15.
